Community Education


The Fitness, Wellness, and Recreation Department is pleased to offer a variety of community education classes, open to the public. Some classes need to have a minimum number of students enrolled for the class to run (specified by course).

Current and Upcoming Classes

Advanced Scuba Diving is designed to introduce students to advanced SCUBA techniques which will allow students to explore more difficult terrain and learn advanced safety procedures. Through home study, class sessions, and pool sessions, students will learn about 5 advanced areas of diving. Successful completion of the 5 learning modules and training dives will certify the student as a PADI Advanced Open Water Diver which is an internationally recognized prestigious certification. Completion of this advanced training will allow a student to move forward in their dive training to learn rescue diving techniques. The cost of the class is $275.

This American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor class trains instructor candidates to teach courses and presentations in the American Red Cross Swimming and Water Safety program by developing your understanding of how to use course materials, how to conduct training sessions, and how to evaluate participants' progress. If you are successful, you will be eligible to teach Parent and Child Aquatics, Preschool Aquatics, Learn-to-Swim, 3 adult-focused courses, the Basic Water Rescue and Personal Water Safety courses, and more. You must be at least 16 years of age and a proficient swimmer. The cost of the class is $175.

The Beginning Scuba Diving class introduces students to the joy and excitement of scuba diving. Through home study, class sessions, and pool sessions, you will learn the essential information needed to scuba dive safely in a swimming pool. After the initial classes at Dive Utah, you can choose to complete open water training at the Homestead Crater in Midway to get your PADI Open Water Diver certification. This prestigious certification is internationally recognized and will allow you a lifetime of scuba enjoyment. The cost of the class is $399.

The Downhill Skiing and Snowboarding class is designed for beginner to advanced skiers and snowboarders (classes are divided based on abilities). The course includes instruction on safety, technique, and winter sports fitness. The cost of the class is $325, which includes full area lift passes on the days that classes are held. Students are responsible for providing their transportation and equipment, however, many ski/snowboard shops provide equipment you can rent.

Enjoy a safe, effective approach to fitness by working out in Jackie Sorensen's fitness classes. The classes combine stretching, flexibility, core work, weight training, and aerobic exercise, and use upbeat and motivating music. You can participate at your own level.

Jackie Sorensen Dance Aerobics

Jackie Sorensen Dance Aerobics classes combine stretching, core work, weight training, and aerobic exercise. All routines are carefully choreographed and fit the mood of the music. The cost of the class is $200.

Jackie Sorensen Step Aerobics

Jackie Sorensen Step Aerobics classes begins with a light cardiovascular routine. Without stopping, you will move on to vertifirm exercises which give you a complete workout that strengthens and firms your upper and lower body (use of hand weights is optional during this segment of class). Then, you will continue with core work (abdominal exercises and pushups). Next, the cardiovascular segment of the class shapes up your heart and gives you more energy. You will finish the class with a cool down to lower your heart rate and leave you feeling great about all you've accomplished in 1 hour. The cost of the class is $110.

The Lifeguarding class teaches participants the knowledge and skills needed to prevent and respond to aquatic emergencies. Class content and activities prepare participants to recognize and respond quickly and effectively to emergencies and prevent drowning and injuries. Upon successful completion of the requirements of the class, you will receive your American Red Cross Lifeguarding and First Aid certification and CPR/AED for the certification. The cost of the class is $175.

Class Prerequisite

To be eligible for the American Red Cross certification, prerequisites must be passed. Prerequisites will be tested on the first day. You must be at least 17 years of age to attend the class at Westminster College.

Course participants must successfully complete the following:

  • Swim 300 yards continuously, using strokes in the following order:
    • 100 yards of front crawl using rhythmic breathing and a stabilizing, propellant kick.
    • 100 yards of breaststroke using a pull, breathe, kick, and glide sequence.
    • 100 yards of either the front crawl or breaststroke (may be a combination of both).
  • • Starting in the water, swim 20 yards using front crawl or breaststroke, surface dive 7-10 ft., retrieve a 10 lb. object, return to the surface, swim 20 yards back to the starting point with the object, and exit the water without using a ladder or steps, within 1 minute and 40 seconds.

Join the Griffins strength and conditioning coaches to learn the basics of Olympic weight lifting and strength training. Each session consists of technique and skill development with lifts such as the clean, snatch, jerks, squats, deadlifts, bench press, overhead presses, and core. All participants will learn variations of each lift, how to properly progress and perform each movement, and how to prevent injuries. Instruction will be given for the first 30–45 minutes with open gym time to lift afterwards. Suited for all training ages. Each session costs $40.

The Yoga Basics course is perfect for anyone who would like to begin a yoga practice or move deeper into their existing yoga practice. The course will focus on the 8 limbs of yoga including postures, breathing, meditation, chanting, etc.

Instructor Jacqueline Morasco has been teaching yoga in Salt Lake City for over 10 years and has a special interest in making the practice as individualized as can be. She likes to take a gentle approach while strengthening and stretching the body, mind, and breath. The cost of the entire session is $70.
